Notes and references
- ↑ Master Mariner. He went to sea aboard J. Godfray`s 114 ton brig Welcome in 1843 as a `Boy`. The ship`s owner was perhaps a relative, as the boy`s godparents were Philippe Godfray and Sophie Baudains, his wife. His aunt-by-marriage was Marie Godfray. He served as a `Boy` until 1846, when he became an Able Seaman. In 1848, he became 2nd Mate, serving in this rank until October 1850, all of which ratings were aboard Welcome. He moved to Godfray and Falle`s 95 ton brigantine Richard, of which he was 1st Mate, 1850-1853, when he gained his Master`s Certificate: UK and Ireland, Masters and Mates Certificates, 1850-1927, at https://www.ancestry.co.uk. A black and white photograph of his portrait in oils, displayed on this page, shows him to have been a sober, honest-faced man
