The 1960s

The Swinging Sixties, as the latter part of the decade came to be known, had as much of an impact in Jersey as elsewhere in the British Isles. We have drawn together pictures and articles from two monthly magazines which made brief appearances during the 1960s - Jersey Topic and Jersey Life

Jersey Topic was first published in 1964, under the editorship of Ted Vibert, a dynamic journalist who had previously worked for the Jersey Evening Post. Its name was changed in 1965 to Island Topic, with its coverage extended to Guernsey. In 1966 the magazine closed when its publishers launched the Island Sun, a weekly newspaper published on Sundays, also edited by Mr Vibert. In 1969, Mr Vibert, who had made a previous unsuccessful attempt to enter the States, emigrated to Australia, where he lived for 30 years, before returning to Jersey and ultimately successfully standing as a States Member.

Jersey Life was launched to fill the slot created by the closure of Island Topic but was only published for just over a year, under the editorship of Iain MacFirbisigh, who was later to become a Deacon in the Roman Catholic Church.
