Listed building

A high quality example of a mid-19th century villa. The interior retains many examples of fine historical features, from cornices to fireplaces, retaining its overall character.

Land bought 1845, house built sometime between 1849 and 1861.

Bought by Robert Playfair, ex East India Company; sold in 1947 for £11,000 to Sydney Horman; again in 1953 to Irene Stone, wife of Edward, architect and owner of Astoria cinema chain and Whitehall Theatre in London.

Sold again in 1963 to Earl of Middleton, who lived here until 1966. In 1973 owned by Dick Cristin, a well known legal figure who set up one of the Island's first international practices with partner George Bedell.

Two-storey three-bay main house with raised ground floor with cellar. Two-bay wing to the north connected by set back bay. East wing added circa 1975. Detached garage to south.

  1. Anything which departs from the standard five-bay Jersey granite house of this era seems to attract the heritage department's 'Villa' label
