Historic Environment Record entry
Listed building
Two-storey, six-bay house. McCormack identifies the main building phase as 1700. The farm buildings burnt down in 1980s. Shown on the Richmond Map of 1795.
Stevens highlights that "bel" means courtyard of a farm and suggests that this farm is one of the de Carteret houses and therefore dates to circa 1500.
The entrance door has a straight unchamfered lintel with chamfered uprights and acorn finials. There is also a mutilated arch and that a stone stairway (removed) led up to it. The extension may a similar date to the house due to the straight topped chamfered doorways, one with acorn chamfer stops and chamfered windows, some with decorated lintels. The east face of the house features a six piece surround window with an accolade lintel.
Old Jersey Houses
Despite the fact that this property is very old - possibly one of the legendary 20 de Carteret farms owned by Philippe de Carteret in the early 16th century - very few details are given in the entry in volume one, and nothing relating to ownership of the property.
