Origins of surname
No surprise that this family name came from the same personal name. That in turn came from Jacob, and ultimately from the Hebrew name Yaakov. Experts dispute the actual meaning of the word
Early records
The first appearance of this surname in Jersey records was the baptism of Elie James, son of Abraham, in St Brelade in 1611. Somewhat surprisingly there are only another 52 baptisms for the family name over the next three centuries
