Notes and references
- ↑ Of La Porte, Rue du Becquet ès Chats, Ville à L`Evêque, Trinity. Jean de Gruchy was perhaps the man of this name who was captain in 1782 of the privateer Lively, J. Jean, Stories of Jersey`s Ships,160. Items of interest still retained by the family, which were previously at The Elms (La Mare), include telescopes, a sword and mid-18th century charts, one of which, by M. Bellin, is dated 1757 and features Boston and the New England coastline
- ↑ Of Greenfield, Rue des Buttes, St John
- ↑ Jean sold La Porte, Trinity, in 1796, and The Elms, St Mary, variously known as La Mare and Elms Farm, was built for him - 1796 datestone. He and his wife moved in the following year. He was Centenier of St Mary, 1808-1811, Lieut RJMA 1810-11, the date of his death. There are several examples in Jersey of Militia Artillery commissions being acquired in middle-age by former privateer officers on settling ashore. This was probably the case in this instance. There is certainly a tradition in the family that their early 19th century prosperity owed much to the sea
