Department de
La Manche

The Cotentin peninsula makes up the majority of the Manche department

La Manche, which translates as 'channel' is the départment (major administrative area) immediately to the east of Jersey. It makes up the westernmost part of Basse Normandie (Lower Normandy) and has long had close ties with the island. It's administrative capital (préfecture) is at St Lo, where many ancient documents mentioning the Channel Islands were held in the archive. The majority were unfortunately lost after the area was heavily shelled during the Second World War

The river Vire flows through St Lo on its way to the sea from the town of the same name

Normandy towns, including twin towns of 11 Jersey parishes
